(Part of a series on Island business)

Food trucks are extremely popular on Governors Island, which at this time has no permanent restaurants. The trucks have been a mainstay for more than five years, and of course, the island is home to the annual Vendy Awards, which this year will be held on September 12. Today there are more than a dozen food trucks on the island; some are under the @govislandfood Twitter handle.

Other food trucks are on the island independently. Most are gathered around Liggett Hall (Building 400) nearby Liggett Terrace.

We got the lowdown from Ben Goldberg, CEO of the Live Fast Group, about which trucks are on the island that his company tweets about and represents. We also have their schedules included.

What trucks do you represent, and when are they on the island?

Best Burger (Sat/Sun)
Carl’s Steaks (Sat/Sun)
Deli N’ Dogz (Sat/Sun)
El Paso Taco (Sat/Sun)
Mausam’s Curry N Bites (Sat/Sun)
Melt Bakery (Sat/Sun)
The Shuka Truck (Sun)
Sweet Chili (Sat/Sun)
Yankee Doodle Dandy (Sat/Sun)

There are vendors that fill in when the seasonal vendors have events:
Chef Samir’s Truck (Fill In)
Papaya King (Fill In)
Toum (Fill in)

Why do you like being on Governors Island?

I love the fact that Governors Island is still mostly untouched and that unlike Central Park you really feel transported out of the city and not surrounded by it. It is only a 5 minute ferry from FIDI but you feel like you are in a different state.

What is new for 2015?

It’s not so much that there is any one thing new in 2015 but more that as people find out about the Island they fall in love with it and as a result there is more programming on the island. The island is very large so it hasn’t even begun to come close to feeling crowded.

Thanks, Ben.
